  TRANSPORTATION:
  • Truck: Several inter and intra state companies, as well as local contact haulers, serve Avenal. Overnight service to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
  • Air: 65 miles northeast to Fresno Air Terminal. Utility Airport - Coalinga Municipal Airport with a 5,280 foot lighted runway. Private airports within 30 miles - Avenal Airport is privately owned.
  • Bus: Kings Area Rural Transit.
  • Highways: Interstate 5, with connections to California Highway 198, 41, and 43. State Highway 33 and 269 run through the City.
INDUSTRIAL SITES:
There are 300 acres under development in the city limits zoned for general industrial that are located directly adjacent to the Interstate 5 corridor. Typical sales prices range from $8,000 to $10,000 per acre. Drainage is good, subsoil is sandy loam and piling is not required. Sizes of water mains are six inches. Sewage is handled by on-site Leachfield/Septic Systems. Several parcels are available on short notice.

WATER SUPPLY:
The pumping capacity is 3 mg/day and an additional 2 mg/day from the back up water source. Residential charges are $15.70 per month plus $1.65 per 100 cubic feet over 700 cubic feet. Water connection charges are $27 per fixture unit.

SEWER SERVICE:
The capacity of the sewer plant is 1.8 mg/day. The peak flow is 5.5 mg/day. Sewer service charge is $12.15 per residence. Type of treatment is activated sludge extended aeration. Sewer connection charge is $27 per fixture unit, plus an additional $8 hook-up fee. Residential garbage service is $15 per month.

RECREATION:
Recreational facilities include one park, two playgrounds and nearby the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Pacific Ocean beaches. The City holds world class sand drags in the spring and fall of each year that attracts hundreds of cars and participants.

HOUSING AVAILABILITY, PRICES AND RENTALS:
Rentals for one and two bedroom apartments and duplexes range from $500 to $650 per month. Rentals for two and three bedroom houses range from $700 to $850 per month. There is one mobile home park and one hotel with 40 total rooms in the community area. There is one subdivision under construction with several tract maps being processed. Single-family housing costs now start at $150,000.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Avenal is a progressive, rapidly growing community, located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Interstate 5. Avenal has a small town atmosphere and is known as the "Oasis in the Sun." It is home to a California prison which employs over 1,000 persons and has boosted the local economy. Avenal was a finalist in the 1992 All-American City Awards Program
